A Pall along the Watchtower: On Leaving the HOPE Conference

All things that live long are gradually so saturated with reason that their origin in unreason becomes improbable.. .. Does the good historian not, at bottom, contradict? —Friedrich Nietzsche, Daybreak We changed " extract " in the first page of the article to " epigraph. " Please check. Precisely because the experience of the 2001 HOPE conference was a bit unnerving, I want to start out with a...

Computing all large sums-of-pairs in Rn and the discrete planar two-watchtower problem

We observe that Matoušek’s algorithm for computing all dominances for a set P of n points in Rn can be employed for computing all pairs of points in such a set whose sum is greater or equal to a given point a ∈ Rn. We apply this observation to the decision problem of the discrete planar two-watchtower problem and obtain an improved solution.

knew-it-all-along effect

1854 People often have difficulty retrospectively determining the level of knowledge they had prior to acquiring new knowledge (e.g., Fischhoff, 1975; Hasher, Attig, & Alba, 1981; Wood, 1978). Fischhoff (1977) coined the phrase knew-it-all-along (KIA) effect to describe this phenomenon, although it also is commonly referred to as hindsight bias. In a typical KIA paradigm, participants respond t...

On the Planar Two-Watchtower Problem

Given a polyhedral terrain (mountain landscape), the shortest watchtower problem is to compute the shortest vertical segment uv erected on the terrain such that every point on the surface of the terrain is visible from the top of uv, say u. The problem arises in geographical information systems , military surveillance, etc. The problem was rst studied by Sharir Sh88], who presented an O(n log 2...

What bio technologists knew all along...?

Qualitative, trial-and-error methods designed to increase the flux to desirable biotechnological products have led to new technologies and vast improvements in existing ones. However, these methods now appear in many cases to have approached their limit. In addition, there is a strong feeling in industry that much of the recent boom in academic knowledge of biochemistry and molecular biology pa...
